Transfer Students

For various reasons, some students decide that they would like to transfer to Sutherland-Chan after having taken part of the massage therapy program at another school. We are open to accepting transfer students provided the conditions are good for a successful transition. We consider such applications on a case-by-case basis.

While the Ontario Core Curriculum mandates the basic program that needs to be followed by Ontario schools, it does not specify how courses should be organized and sequenced. It is easier to transfer when the programs of the schools in question have a reasonably similar design. Students interested in moving over to our school need to supply us with course outlines for the material they have covered to date so that we can assess how best to proceed. If necessary, we may have applicants challenge exams to give us a clearer picture of their standing in particular subject areas.

We also require previous academic records and references as we would for a regular applicant to the school.

With this documentation on hand, our admissions team looks at each application and assesses the 'fit' and general viability of the request. Most transfers happen between first and second year since this is usually the easiest place to make the transition.

When an application to transfer is accepted, there are usually curriculum elements that need to be made up and some additional training that must take place, for example orientation to our Student Clinic routines and policies. As a result, a tutorial 'bridging' program is designed. Since students frequently transfer in groups, we often run 3-4 day intensives that are cost effective for them. Individual tutoring is also appropriate and may be easiest, depending on the circumstances.
